The Story of IRES-8
IRES‐8 –“Instigation of Research and Innovation Partnership on Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Energy Solutions for Cities” is a collaboration between the Universities of Manchester, Bologna, Zagreb and Norwegian University of Science and Technology with four partner institutions in China: Tsinghua University, Beijing Jiaotong University, North China Electric Power University and the State Grid Smart Grid Research Institute.
IRES‐8 funds EU PhD students and early career researchers to spend extended periods of between 3 and 9 months to pursue strategically important low carbon energy research at one of the internationally regarded Chinese partner institutions.
Long term prosperity in the EU energy sector requires access to global leading research, and collaboration with China to better understand of their mature technical infrastructure and state of the art facilities will begin to rebalance the EU-China partnership
The Objectives of IRES-8 are
- To build closer and more structured research collaborations between the partners, who are already leading research organisations in the low carbon energy sector
- To engage talented EU researchers in strategically important low carbon energy research in the Chinese partner organisations
- To improve the researchers' ability to work in China and help them understand how large, medium and small companies can exploit the research undertaken by Chinese institutions
- To disseminate and apply the knowledge acquired to develop EU expertise and skills and help strengthen EU trade with China, especially in the energy sector.
